DLA Piper A glance at history The history of Bulgarian law and legislation can be traced back to the 9th century and the rules of Khan Krum (803-814). However, the roots of the contemporary legal system of Bulgaria developed during the second half of the nineteenth century when Bulgaria became an independent state after the liberation from the Ottoman dominance. In 1879 Bulgaria adopted its first constitution, thus becoming a constitutional republic. The current legal system of the country developed in the years following 1989 further to significant economical and political changes leading to the transformation of Bulgaria's economy into a modern free-market system. New legislation was adopted regulating all matters pertaining to a free-market economy, and after the accession of Bulgaria into the European Union in 2007 the law of the EU has been accordingly implemented in Bulgaria.
