Gradually transitioning from socialism, Bulgaria, now both a European Union (EU) and NATO member, is progressively catching up to EU standards. Though the country’s living conditions are substantially lower than other EU economies, the Bulgarian government is making significant improvements to meet the high standards set by the other EU states. In spite of the modern restoration and construction taking place in the major cities of Bulgaria, the country has managed to preserve much of its culture and heritage. The turbulent and colourful history of the country is evident throughout Bulgaria; from the ancient ruins dating back to the first few centuries, to the various foods influenced by the different foreign rulers. The Bulgarian landscape too differs greatly across the country. Vast mountainous areas cover a large part of the country and are ever increasing destinations for tourist ski holidays. The beach resorts on the east coast of Bulgaria also offer holiday makers a chance to enjoy the beautiful coastline along the Black Sea. With regards to native Bulgarians, they themselves are very proud of their traditions, culture and heritage and their attitude towards non natives is both warm and hospitable. Christian Orthodox is the most prominent religion in Bulgaria and the beautiful Orthodox churches and numerous grand monasteries located around the country are a frequent reminder of the country’s old religious beliefs.
